Abstraction is the relationship between photography and abstraction is fascinating.
Unlike other visual art forms which begin with a blank space or surface that has to be filled by the artist photography begins with a world full of information already. The conventional job of the photographer is to select and capture a small portion of space in a relatively faithful manner. However, it could be argued that all art, including photography, is essentially abstract. Photographs are versions of realit they are flat they have edges. Photographs is an artful selection and they are silent.
The Art of Photography: Abstraction in Photography:
The YouTube video titled “Abstraction in Photography” is presented by Ted Forbes who is the creator of “The Art of Photography” series. Forbes goes into the concept of abstraction within the realm of photography exploring how photographers can move beyond literal representations to convey deeper meanings and emotions. Ted Forbes is known for examining influential photographers who have embraced abstraction Man Ray which uses art forms such as texture, form, and unconventional perspectives to create abstract images that challenged viewers perceptions.

This photo is taken by Man ray and the subject is Max Ernst, this isnt a great example of abstraction however it still has abstaction elements to it such as the fact that he has shattered the image distorting Ernst’s features making his eyes misaligned etc, to add to the abstraction of the image he has includeds some tect in the negitive space created between the large shards of glass.

This Photo is a good example of paper abstraction, as man ray has been able to make the paper look interestiing via cutting it inot. swir shape and being able to potion it in a postion that creates alot of abstraction through the shadows, I like the effect that the swirl shape has as it takes away from the realism of the photo. the lines of the swirl add layers to the image creating a sense of depth.
In response to man ray i have tried to replicate his style of abstraction by using contrasting lighting and monotone colours and using this to create visually interesting images with geometric patterns and shapes

I have used some stands and clamps to hold the paper in a position that creates a very visually interesting range of shapes, I have also tried to create layering by positioning the paper so that there would be lots of overlapping segments. I have used a very high shutter speed so that the background won’t be visible as during this process we were using strobe lights to light op the paper and create shadows onto the paper.

I then continued using the same technique throughout the next 3 photos however i twisted the nd filter that i had on the camera

with these photos I had folded a piece of a3 paper in half and hung it infront of a white background, I then targeted the different areas with different colours of light which I would consistently change to colours that are contrasting and complimentary.
I feel that I should’ve been more creative with my composition by maki g more angular with more defined edges. Cause the paper was overlapping the camera was t the best a focusing on both.
